I installed [Update Flash Player] today, ran it and it found that my version of Flash was not up to date. It then directed me to the update page of the Adobe Flash web site. Sure enough, my version was older... Works as described, and worth not having to worry about the Flash security hole.

Keeping up with security updates is a critical part of maintenance. Update Flash Player helps Mac users to stay current. Until recently, Mac users were not automatically notified about new versions of Flash Player. Flash Player 10.3 recently introduced auto-update notification, but appears to be limited to weekly checks.

Example notification

Details

Each time it is opened, Update Flash Player checks for an update to the Flash Player plug-in. When a newer version is found, an alert is displayed prompting users to update.

To be effective, Update Flash Player should be installed in the Applications folder and scheduled to run regularly. The program does not run continuously. Instead it checks only when run. When installed in the Applications folder, the program will offer to schedule weekly checks (other intervals can also be chosen.)

Requirements

This software requires Flash Player to be installed only at its default location, /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/. Manual installation elsewhere is technically possible, but unusual. This software checks only the default location.

Update Flash Player requires internet access to the current version listed on the Adobe website. Proxy server authentication is not supported at this time.

Tested with Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7. (Please note that Adobe's current version of Flash Player now requires Mac OS X 10.6 or newer.)
