I installed [Update Flash Player] today, ran it and it found that my version of Flash was not up to date. It then directed me to the update page of the Adobe Flash web site. Sure enough, my version was older... Works as described, and worth not having to worry about the Flash security hole.

Check Time Machine

     $0.99 via PayPal

Keeping an eye on backups is an important part of maintenance. Time Machine usually "just works", but sometimes it quietly fails, leaving users with the feeling they're protected when in fact they're moving ever further away from safety. Check Time Machine helps by checking for errors and successful backups and reporting the status.

Each time it's run, Check Time Machine checks the system log for Time Machine errors and successful backups within the last 24 hours and displays the current status. When problems are found, the Review button brings up the Time Machine log and preferences which can be reviewed to determine the cause.

To be effective, Check Time Machine should be installed in the Applications folder and scheduled to run weekly. The program does not run continuously. Instead it checks only when run. When installed in the Applications folder, the program will offer to schedule weekly checks.

Users should periodically test restoring from backups and review the Time Machine preferences and log. No software can detect all potential problems, but Check Time Machine helps you to keep an eye on your backups.

Check Time Machine requires Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6, Time Machine, TextEdit for log reporting and iCal for weekly scheduling.
